Dear Colleagues, 

Some months ago, Dr. Thomas Scalea, Executive Director of the Panamerican Trauma Society selected Dr. Rao Ivatury to chair the Search Committee to select the next Executive Director.

Dr. Ivatury carried out this work in according to the process as proscribed by the PTS in an open and transparent manner.

This process has come to an end and Dr. Ivatury informs us that the new Executive Director will be Dr. Antonio Marttos, who will be officially presented to the PTS membership during our next annual meeting at the end of July, in Florianópolis Brazil.

The executive committee thanks Dr. Ivatury and congratulates Dr. Marttos.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

Dear friends

On behalf of the search committee for Executive Director, I wanted to give you an update on the process.

On January 26, the committee will hold an interview of the candidates, Drs. Esteban Foianini and Antonio Marttos. Dr. Michel Aboutanos has withdrawn his candidacy and has returned to the search committee as a voting member in his capacity as a member of the Board of Directors.

The Town hall meeting with all the members (active, dues paid) and the candidates is scheduled for February 16 at 12:00 pm ET, and I hope you will attend and interact with the candidates. The committee members will take these conversations into consideration when voting for the final selection.

CONVOCATORIA DE NOMINACIONES PARA DIRECTOR EJECUTIVO SPT 

The Executive Committee of the Panamerican Trauma Society (PTS) is seeking nominations for the role of Executive Director (ED). Self-nominations are encouraged. The Executive Director serves a 3-year term which can be extended for another 3 years at the discretion of the PTS Board of Directors. The selection process will be governed as defined in the bylaws of the PTS.

Nominees should meet the position qualifications criteria. See the role of the Executive Director below

Nominations will be accepted from September 1, 2022 through November 30, 2022.

The PTS Executive Committee will serve as the Selection Committee. Dr Rao Ivatury, former Executive Director will serve as the Chairman of the Selection Committee

Following closure of the nomination period, the Selection Committee will review all nominees and select three nominees. Overall contribution to trauma care, previous relevant experience, and prior service and demonstrated commitment to the PTS mission will be considered important in the process.

The PTS Executive Committee and Board of Directors will hold virtual and/or face to face interviews with the 3 selected candidates during the 6 months prior to the final selection. Each candidate will have 30 minutes to present his/her analysis of the PTS and their goals for the PTS including a business plan, if they wish. There will the opportunity for questions and answers by both the Committee and the candidate.

Two finalists will be selected.

A final set of interviews will be conducted by the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors with the two finalists within three months of the end of the term of the current Executive Director, which may occur at the annual meeting. The interviews will be recorded and distributed to Board members not able to attend.

Members of the Executive Committee and the Board will select the next Executive Director through a blinded process.

The new Executive Director will be announced at the PTS business meeting in 2023 and will assume the role at that time.

JOB DESCRIPTION EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Job Title: Executive Director, Panamerican Trauma Society (PTS)


Job purpose:

The PTS Executive Director (ED) is responsible for providing comprehensive leadership for the PTS operational management, goal setting and long-term growth.  Reporting to the board of directors, the executive director will oversee and stablish the strategic priorities and operational efficiency of PTS programs and staff.


The ED role and responsibilities:

  • Responsible for overseeing the society’s programs development and implementation
  • Accountable for creating condition for financial success and expanding revenue sources to support existing and new programs to fulfill society’s mission. He / She has demonstrated experience leading fundraising and marketing activities, and community outreach events.
  • Serves as the Chief Administrative Officer of the Society. Signs contracts and other obligations in the name of the Society with the approval of the Board of Directors and supervises administrative staff recommended by the Board of Directors. Oversees and approves annual budgets and financial plans for the Society, approves initiatives, programs, expenditures and other Society business deem appropriate.
  • The ED develops and supports the Society’s leadership team and defines relationships with other Societies and stakeholders. Serves as ex-officio member on all committees of the Society, subject to the approval of the President.


Requirements:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the Society’s mission, vision and values
  • Proven leadership experience in a high performing and diversified healthcare organization
  • Strategic thinker with strong business, organizational, analytical, and fiscal knowledge and skills
  • Successful leadership, coaching, and relationship management experience.
  • Ability to commit significant time to carry out PTS strategic programmatic agenda
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusive leadership


Eligibility:

  • A candidate must be a PTS “active” member (member in good standing) with a proven history of engagement with PTS within the past 5 years.
  • Must be willing to serve a three-year term and carry out the powers and duties of the Executive Director outlined in the bylaws and this job description.
  • Self-nominations are accepted.

  • A personal nominating statement written by the candidate (500 words or less); candidate should indicate their willingness to serve if selected
  • Current CV (limit of 10 pages)
  • A PTS business plan (optional)

Chair of the selecting committee for

the new executive director 

Dear Colleague of PTS

I am writing to you as the Chair of the committee for selecting the new executive director (ED) for our Society to follow Dr Thomas Scalea.

I want to thank the executive committee for giving me this honor. I would also like to congratulate Dr Scalea for his phenomenal job for the past six years and in guiding us through the very difficult times of the recent past . He also very kindly gave us an extra year of leadership to allow us ample time to select his successor. Our Society is on the cusp of achieving great things and we need an individual of Tom’s stature and abilities to realize our potential.

You must have received a call for nominations for the ED  position from the office of PTS. For your recall, the duties of the ED and the process of selecting ED are stated in our by-laws as follows:

            Section III.6.a. The Executive Director shall be the Chief Administrative Officer of the Society. The Executive Director shall, unless otherwise so determined by the Board of Directors, sign and execute all authorized bonds, contracts or other obligations in the name of the Society; with the approval of the Board of Directors, employ and supervise an administrative staff; present to the Board of Directors recommendations for programs and policies consistent with the mission and goals of the Society; develop and submit for approval to the Board of Directors the annual budget for the Society; and, within the limitations of these Bylaws and subject to the review and approval by the Board of Directors, manage the day-to-day activities of the Society. Subject to the approval of the President, the Executive Director serves ex-officio on all committees of the Society.

Section III.6.b. Term of Service. The Executive Director shall serve a term of three-years, subject to a one-term renewal determined by the Board of Directors.

Section III. 6. c. Nominations *. The Executive Committee shall open a three-month period of nominations and self-nominations twelve months prior the end of the term of the Executive Director (or the next annual meeting)*. The Executive committee will select three nominees who have proven his/her commitment to the PTS mission. 

Section III. 6. d. Interviews *. The Executive Committee and the Board shall conduct phone, and face-to-face interviews to no less than three selected candidates six months prior the end of the term of the Executive Director (or the annual meeting). The candidates will have 30 minutes to present his/her statement and business plans and for questions and answers. A third and final interview shall be conducted with the last two top candidates three months before the end of the term of the Executive Director (or the annual meeting). The interview shall be recorded and distributed to all board members.

Section III. 6. e. Selection *. The board shall select a candidate anonymously through a blind process a month prior to the annual meeting. Board members shall be in good standing with their membership dues to vote for the Executive Director. The new Executive Director shall be positioned on his/her role during the General Assembly at the PTS annual meeting*.

*Please note that the dates mentioned above may be modified because of the possibility of earlier annual meeting in July 2023.

 The deadline for nominations is the end of November 2022. I am imploring you to give some thought in identifying a person with the qualities and capabilities to serve as our ED. This may be yourself or someone you admire. It is imperative that we all participate in this process of electing the best person for the job. We toiled hard and achieved a lot for the past three decades . We have a lot more to accomplish.  I am counting on you for your help in electing the leader that will  take us there. This is our Society and each of us, without exception, must work to get there.
